POWER IN THE BLOOD, PART 1

I try not to sing worship songs mindlessly. But this evening at Bible class, when we sang the old hymn, “Power in the Blood” my brain went to sleep. I’ve sung that song 300-400 times in my life. I started to zone out.

But not for long! Something jolted me awake. “Pay attention! Don’t take this for granted.”

So I paid attention.

Most of the lyrics to that song are related to cleansing. That concept has long fascinated me.

My experience with blood is that if it gets on stuff, the stain it leaves is difficult to get out. But Jesus’ blood does not work that way. If we are walking in the light, it cleans us from all sin, washing us whiter than snow. I’m so grateful for that aspect of Christ’s blood
flowing from Calvary!

So while we were singing “Power in the Blood,” that all flashed through my mind. Then I thought of something else.

My son and I had been reading in health class about bone fractures. An orthopedic surgeon wanted to get human bones to regenerate. His research team placed a bone powder / blood paste on a broken bone. The blood stimulated healing.

Knowing how the Lord loves to give us earthly analogies of heavenly concepts, during that hymn the idea came to me that maybe there is more to the blood of Jesus than cleansing.

What if…

What if Jesus’ blood stimulates healing in our broken and sin-wounded hearts? Hmmm.

While Jesus was on earth, He said this about Himself, reading from the prophet Isaiah:

The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the
Lord.’
Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, ‘Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.’”

So, yes, apparently the blood of Jesus heals as well as cleanses. As we finished the chorus with, “There is wonder-working power...in the precious blood of the Lamb,” my smile spread from ear-to-ear!

(More thoughts about the power of Jesus' blood in a near-future post.)

P.S. If you have experienced the healing power of Jesus' blood, I'd love to hear
your thoughts about that in the comments below.
